This Saturday the Yacht Club Sant Feliu de Guíxols joined the European day of cleaning Let’s Clean Up Europe, organizing a garbage collection activity around the dock of the port and the area of Cala Jonca. Some of the participants also collected plastics and bottles floating in the sea.

18 young people, both from the Optimist race team and from the members of the Sailing School, joined the activity by collecting a total of seven rubbish bags. Among the rubbish were mainly plastic bottles, but also cans, cigarette butts, plastic and paper cups or snack bags among other waste.

An awareness campaign

The aim of this European campaign is to raise public awareness of the scope of the problem of uncontrolled dumping and to promote changes in the habits and behavior of citizens through the organization of voluntary clean-up actions in natural areas such as forests, beaches, rivers or streams.

In Catalonia, more than 480 natural environment cleaning activities have been organized, some sixty of which have taken place in the province of Girona.
